Essay on White Privilege | Ivory Research
Question : Is white privilege a useful concept in the quest for racial justice? Why or why not? Racism and discrimination are examples of problems bedeviling American society. These challenges require feasible measures and strategies to solve. If not white privilege essay, these issues may have adverse effects on people. White privilege is one of the fueling factors, encouraging racial inequalities; that is, white privilege essay, those benefits that appear to merit white descents at the expense of the people of color in America.
Non-whites mostly believe that the whites are systemically entitled to special treatment and they enjoy this advantage at the expense of others, especially the blacks. The white privilege concept stems from the historical development and progression of American society and it exists in the present day. Even though its definition appears segregative, white privilege ideology is explicitly used by activists in order to create awareness on the importance of racial justice, and equality in treating people from different races.
Historical privilege associated with the white race white privilege essay access to education and health. This notion is valid noting most of the historical American scholars were whites because they had a chance to attend schools and attain a better education. In the past, most racial groups did not have the adequate privilege of attending school. Instead, only whites were permitted to attend schools so that they could extend their supremacy over people of color. Historically, white privilege fostered a positive relationship between the whites and security personnel, white privilege essay, such as the regular police.
Consequently, they would easily ask for security support and protection from the police without any suspicion. These two factions connected without any problem. Notably, a white privilege allowed whites to own property in America without collaterals, verifications, and regulations Jacobson Access to health is another area worth scrutinizing in this forum. In the past, whites had access to better healthcare compared to people of color, white privilege essay. This approach demeaned people of color, thereby creating an overt rift between whites and other races. Slavery also encouraged the white privilege concept, depicting them as superior over other races. They played the master position in all territories across America, mistreating people of color. Slavery and slave trade are two vices that were globally condemned in the world.
For example, the southern slavery state establishment had people of color working for meager wages or without payment, a technique that enhanced the white privilege concept Anderson The justice system was biased during this period, noting the whites had all privileges in the court. The people of color had no say, and they were punished unjustly without a fair trial. This trend was exhibited by the white privilege essay of seats in public transport as whites had front seats portioned for them while blacks sat at the back. Also, white privileges were rampant in institutions of learning and places of work. Most of these white privilege essay had whites as heads, white privilege essay, and so they had the privilege of deciding how to manage people.
White privilege is still currently prevalent, as whites appear to enjoy some freedom, white privilege essay. They are more likely to look less suspicious, unlike people of color who have high chances of being suspected by police on the ground of their outlook. For example, white privilege essay, the killing of Trayvon Martin by a white individual, George Zimmerman exhibits this belief. Martin had put on a jacket with a hood and Zimmerman white privilege essay shot him. Zimmerman was then charged with second-degree murder McClure and Cherise Increased incarceration and killings of people white privilege essay color on the belief that they are brutal and that they look suspicious, demonstrates the white privilege concept.
In another instance, officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed White privilege essay Ferrel, a year old football player, on the ground of suspicion without justifying the reason why the boy approached him Golash-Boza These instances exhibit problems that people of color have with security authorities, which is uncharacterized for the whites, who appear to have a smooth relationship with the police officers. Another observation portraying white privilege is the high number of whites in public service positions and institutions of national importance. On the other hand, people of color are more likely to be vindicated in drug-related activities than whites.
Notably, the white privilege concept can be useful in the quest for racial justice in American society. This ideology has several weaknesses and strengths that can be used as a driving force for eradicating racism, white privilege essay. One of the weaknesses lies in the institutional implementation, as well as its promotion. By definition, white privilege accounts for the superiority of whites over people of color. In some way, this notion acquits whites of suspicion of crime-related activities while people of color are commonly perceived as aggressive and violent, which increases their chances of being portrayed as bad people.
This perception heightens segregation. One of the strengths of white privilege is that it is just a mere human to human treatment, relating to handling benefits that whites obtain from whites and other people. Extending these benefits to other races can help mitigate the discrimination in society, as it will encourage equality and better treatment of each other; that is, people will have a conscious mind when handling their colleagues. White privilege discriminates against people of color, noting whites tend to favor themselves while disregarding others. Notably, this perception also makes them have a cordial relationship with authorities. If the same desirable relationship can be forged such that the people of color also connect well with police and other law enforcement personnel, then discrimination can be minimized significantly Anderson This way, there will be a significant drop in the rate of blacks incarcerations, as well as race-related killings.
Generally, white privilege essay, white privilege act as a benchmark for society to learn how to treat one another by fostering justice and equality. Racial discrimination is an adverse vice, and as such, a feasible mitigation approach is worthy of solving it. Having a desirable ideology about the diverse race aspect of American society is one crucial step in mitigating this problem; that is, people should view it as a feature that encourages diversity. Instead of fighting against each other on a racial basis, society should be empowered through learning so that people can understand the merits associated with diverse cultures Jacobson People should be trained to acknowledge that racism and discrimination exist in society. From that knowledge, open forums about these vices should then be encouraged in society and that strict regulation should be instituted to control operations of the government institutions concerning this problem.
That is, most premises, both private and public, should embrace equality and fairness in handling people regardless of their race. In conclusion, white privilege, a historical ideology in American society, is useful in encouraging racial justice white privilege essay equality. By definition, white privilege essay, it is segregative yet helpful in curbing racism and discrimination. Anderson, Carol. White rage: The unspoken truth of our racial divide. Bloomsbury, USA. The use of Shakespearean language gives a sense of timelessness; that the time it takes place is irrelevant; it can happen any time, any where, to any people, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, and this is what matters. It addresses a young adult audience, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, who are familiar with both the situations which arise and the pop-like video style of shooting, with the fairly pacey storyline. At the very beginning of the film, there is a vague sense of mystery given by the fuzzy sounds of the TV tuning in. we are not entirely sure of what we are going to see, and so the tuning in of the TV represents how we are trying to grasp the story, trying to latch on to what is happening around us.
We see the black and white screen with the noise of no reception just before the newsreader appears on the screen, and so we anticipate that what we are about to hear will be important, or worth waiting for. We relate it to how we feel when we are waiting for the news to come on, and so the way that the story is presented; as the focus of a news report and the distinct tuning in of the viewer, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, means we expect the story to affect us. The way in which this introduction is presented sets its status to us. Its obvious sense of importance and slight air of tragedy contributes discretely to the overall atmosphere the audience feels at the beginning of this film.
The television set is placed in the middle of the screen, and all around it is plain blank blackness. This is deliberate to keep the attention on the screen, which mirrors the importance of this story and this news item. It only adds on to the overall feel. This represents to us one of the key elements of the story; symbols of unity, split. The ring is a wedding ring, we later find out, and so we transfer this image not to a broken marriage, but to one that was split. It represents a marriage broken against its will, and so the already subconscious feeling of tragedy to be expected is reinforced by this image.
During this shot, the camera slowly and gradually zooms in on the TV set, and so the TV set gradually fills up more and more of the space in the screen, pushing the black back ground out. It mirrors how we can sometimes feel that when someone is talking to us they seem far away, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay their words seem distant, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay. It makes the viewer feel like this story relates to them, how distant sounds become common ground. The overall feeling this aspect of the shot gives of is that baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay involvement.
It makes the audience anticipate once more that this story will affect them as an individual. As the beginning sequence takes off into a rapid Rolla coaster of images, the music and atmosphere take on an entirely different tone. It goes from one of casual, and maybe more intense interest, to one of extreme excitement and tension. This is due partly to the speed of the shots and their content, but mostly because of the music and the ideas and images it puts across. The music portrays the idea of overwhelming emotion above all. It is extremely dramatic in its use of emotion, and the power and energy you feel from it. The high pitch of both the piano chords and vocal baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay give an idea of excitement and speed, and the classical element to baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, the traditional instruments and ensemble, give the idea of depth, meaning and sophistication.
The high tempo of the piece as it climaxes towards the end increases with the pitch, representing how the power and the emotion and the intensity all build up together. When the piece does climax, it then abruptly subsides, and the film titles and quiet remain. It is natural to associate dark feelings with dark nights, and so sad atmospheres with darkness. So again, moods are split, and the audience is intrigued and very curious about what is to come. The other lighting effects that stand out to the audience are the bright flashing lights.
The two main sources of bright flashing lights are the lights of emergency service vehicles, and the bright lights of Vegas. These freeze-frames are usually taken from later periods of the film, when a lot has happened, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay. The characters often look menacing or anxious. We see a brief window into what is to come, and we see the faces of highly-strung, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, grieving and on edge characters, all of who appear to be close to either Romeo or Juliet.
When we see these traits in the people of the story, we combine these new characteristics to the atmosphere created previously, and later it is added to the atmosphere yet to come, and our atmosphere of danger and excitement becomes one of ominous emotion. This foreboding feeling is the product of the things that have just flashed before our senses; the power, the emotion, the excitement, the danger and the worry. The screen with the titles wipes onto the Montague boys speeding down a highway, wearing loud Hawaiian shirts and brave hairstyles.
They are jumping about, very over-excited, playing loud music and yelling a lot. The music is very upbeat and rap-like, and associated with carefree youths. The impression is immediately given that these boys are fun loving, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, self assured, confident and aggressive. It is a bright sunny day, and they are in an open top car. It, again, gives that sense of carefree fun, contentment and a completely worry-free atmosphere. They offer more relaxed and easygoing prospects than that of the music and images in the previous sequence; however it is possible that their pride and aggression may get the better of them.
As the Montague boys party in the car, the camera tracks it from behind. Indeed, most of these shots are close ups, or at least within a few metres of the characters, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay. The viewer feels closer to the action. It makes the audience feel as if they are in the car also, and so the excitement seems more real to them. The man in the back seat turns around and speaks to the camera with a tone of excitement, and so it feels as if you are in the car and he is talking to you. This feeling contrasts slightly that of what we have seen before, as it seems so much more social and fun. The audience feels more relaxed and comfortable.
This, similarly to the car, is also baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay to the Capulets. The black eye just points out once more that they are very loud, confident and self assured, that they get into brawls and fights, and that we can expect something from them the more calm characters could not offer. These things just highlight points already in the backs of the minds of the viewers, and strengthen them as composites of the atmosphere being built. Of the combinations of our ominous emotional atmosphere, power, emotion, danger, worry and excitement these images enforce the excitement and the danger sides of the scale.
Our first image of the Capulets is their blue car, not dissimilar to that of the Montagues. One Capulet has the cross shaved into the back of his head, and Tybalt has a Celtic-style cross on his clothing. We get the impression that their rivalry is misplaced because of their likeness in beliefs, taste and family pride. This indirectly gives us the impression that he is feared and respected, as if it is no coincidence that the viewer who recently felt to be a Montague is at the feet of their enemy. Because the Capulets seem so menacing and sinister, the audience are feeling what the Montagues feel; timid and frightened.
It leaves them unsure of what they are now expecting, because of the more vulnerable side on the Montagues they have just seen in contrast to the previous images of them. The Capulets seem particularly menacing due baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay the camera shots. It highlights individual characteristics of his personality, and the snarl increases the menace he already displays. When Tybalt is speaking, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, there is no sound, apart from a faint whistle of the wind. The petrol station is in fact by a main road, but still no noise. This keeps the focus on the words he is mouthing, making it seem more powerful.
It also is a discrete reference to the Spaghetti Westerns, with the traditional sounds of the wind whistling. The fire in the petrol station represents the burning anger of the two parties involved. It creates an atmosphere contrasting drastically to the one beforehand, with long distance shots and a lot going on very quickly. We immediately know that what is to come will be different, and with the silence as well, a feeling of anticipation and trepidation is created. The darkness adds a feeling of unease and nervousness to the worried anticipation. To summarize, at this point in the film, the music, lighting, shots and characterisation all add up to feelings of anticipation of the expected denouement, unease and worry, but also a sense of privacy now that the outside world is closed off.
Luhrman has used similar techniques baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay that of the beginning scene showing the Montague boys in their car. In that scene, the wide spaciousness, lighting, noise, music and shouting all gave a sense of contentment and excitement. It seems he is hesitating; perhaps he is thinking. It is clear that the audience was intended to feel empathy when Romeo makes his way down the isle, but at this point in time, the music level is still low, the lighting is beginning to pick up, and Romeo is staying mostly still. As Romeo proceeds down the isle, the atmosphere changes to one of nervousness, sadness and unsure anticipation.
Romeo walks very slowly, and looks very pained and thoughtful. We also see tracking camera shots of Romeo, showing the scene from his point of view, so the audience feels as if they are in his shoes. His eyes are fixed, looking ahead to where Juliet lies. The music mirrors what the audience interprets from the characterisation, and so the feeling is strengthened. Romeo presents a very nervous disposition, and naturally, the viewer shares these instincts, and so the nervousness and unease is felt strongly. His slow movements represent his fear of what is ahead, and worry, and his need to think about what is happening and what he should do.
He is considering killing himself; he seems quite sure of it, as he has the bottle grasped tightly in his hand, as if, ironically, it was his lifeline. In the last of the opening scenes of the film which I looked at, there was a fire, which represented the hatred between the two groups; the friction and the conflict. At the end, Juliet is surrounded by candles, lots of them, but this time the flames represent the beauty and importance of Juliet. It brings the focus straight to her. It makes everything seem so much more upsetting to Romeo, as she was treasured so much. The candles and the surrounding darkness make us feel pained, and indeed Romeo feels the same, as he reflexes as he would if he were feeling overpowering physical pain.
The music gradually builds up as Romeo makes his way down the isle. There is a crescendo, at which point Romeo is looking with desperation at Juliet, and with the music steadily increasing in volume, the feeling of overwhelming emotion resumes. At the beginning of the film, powerful and dramatic music was used to create this same atmosphere, but this time around it is slower, and sadder, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay, and represents more about forlorn hope and great sadness than an overall tragedy. While Romeo is walking down the isle, we see some shots from his point of view as he approaches Juliet. It makes baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay feelings seem more real, and makes the audience more involved and caught up.
It greatens the sadness also, because the feeling of empathy is literally right there in front of you. Once Romeo has joined Juliet, from that moment on, the shots are all very close up. It gives a huge sense of intimacy with the characters, which, in the long run, means their deaths are more of a tragedy. We see many small movements in Juliet, such as her fingers or eyelids twitching, and they are quite clear in comparison to the predominant stillness around her. Since we felt as if we shared something with them; the intimacy, baz luhrmann romeo and juliet essay also feel the loss when he dies.
These scenes are very slow; to provoke thought maybe.

Shakespeare in love - Free Essay Example - Words | blogger.com
In this media assignment, shakespeare in love essay, I will be looking at and interpreting the film Shakespeare in Love. Although at first the film looks to be fairly normal, there are subtle things, which generally make it more appealing to us. The director needed to add these subtle things to make the film look and feel realistic, so that the audience would think the film was believable. I am going to write about what these subtle things are, and what their impact is on the audience — as well as giving my thoughts on each. A lot of my points will refer to the time period, because it will be very important to the director — to make the film believable.
Tied into this, I think the opening sequence was discreetly meant to look old. Something that I noticed was that the opening credits telling us the cast names etc. were in black and white. I would associate black and white with the past, because in the earlier years of the 20th century, films used to be in black and white, before colour was introduced later on. This was as well as the font of the writing being in the font that we would associate with old England. Because the director did this, we get the impression that the film is set in the 16th century — even before the film has begun. There was only one thing that I thought was wrong with the opening sequence. Nothing else was happening when the opening credits were on, never mind any decent on screen action!
Anything that was happening would have given us a taste of what was to come later on. I think this was why music seemed to be extremely important to the director as well. Not only was it frequently played, the instruments played suited the period Shakespeare in Love was set shakespeare in love essay. Also, the tempo, pitch, and loudness of the music are all very important. Whenever an important part of the film is on screen, we hear completely different types of music, even though the same instruments are used. For example, when Thomas Kemp was auditioning for the part of Romeo, background music gradually got louder.
The pitch also seemed to get higher. It is hard to describe why the music felt this way, but the music seems to uplift our feelings, just as the pitch and volume got higher. I think the on screen action also reflects how we shakespeare in love essay, because we can usually see the emotion being portrayed as the music is being played. This was also done shakespeare in love essay many other places, such as the scene where Shakespeare was running down the street with the first scene in his hand, and also when Thomas Kemp listens to Shakespeare reads a sonnet on stage — realising I think that she wanted to be the part of Romeo in his play. This type of music was almost certainly used intentionally because of the numerous places it turned up in. The tempo increased dramatically, and the pitch of the music was dropped slightly to get this feeling.
The best example of this music was when Shakespeare was chasing Thomas Kemp through the streets, after their audition. However important this is to the director, the camera shakespeare in love essay need to be just as good. We saw that on several occasions the level of the camera reflected the class system old England had. We could see this clearly at the very end of the film, when Romeo and Juliet was being performed — because the common audience were at the bottom of the stage, whereas the royal box was overlooking the stage — and directly above the 3rd class people.
This showed us that the higher-class people were in the position that resembled their status — higher up. We also saw something similar at the beginning of the film, when Henslowe was being tortured. We saw that the camera was looking up to Fennyman the torturershakespeare in love essay, and down at Henslowe. I think this was because Fennyman was the person in control of his peers. This meant that Henslowe was metaphorically speaking looking up to Fennyman to try to gain his forgiveness — as did the camera whenever Fennyman spoke. No advanced techniques were used in the film such as zoom or fadingwhich I think was a fairly discreet thing to do, yet very effective for the people who notice it.
I think the lack of modern techniques used represented the lack of shakespeare in love essay that the people had in the 16th century. I really liked the techniques used, because they show us that the director seems to have really tried to make the film believable — yet used a variety of different ways. These techniques may appeal to a more observant audience — because they will get that little extra for the money they pay, whereas people who are less observant will probably be happy with the on-screen scenery and props; which only make the film look and not feel old. This ties in with a previous point I made at the bottom of page one, regarding getting a first impression. If the audience were expecting a realistic film which in this case they would bethey would not be impressed by a modern looking set in the first few minutes, as they should know that Shakespeare lived hundreds of years ago.
The audience would then probably notice more of the modern things put into the film, rather than any old things visible or otherwise. Such obvious background features included the use of lighted candles to light an area, instead of electric light bulbs, particularly in pubic buildings. Also, rats were occasionally seen on screen — with the most memorable time for me being when the young boy speaking to Shakespeare picked one up by its tail, shakespeare in love essay. These are fairly obvious examples, shakespeare in love essay, but are only used in the background, shakespeare in love essay. One physical feature that stood out were the characters clothes — because they were always on screen and also because they were often unusual, making them stand out a lot of the time.
Although they suited the time, they seemed to lack originality. Also, the director could have distinguished Shakespeare to be in a particular class. This is because Shakespeare tended to fall in between class structures as far as his clothing was concerned — as his clothes were neither old or worn, denoting a poor person, nor bizarre and extravagant, shakespeare in love essay, denoting a rich person. The only thing that impressed me with the clothing was that they usually made the important characters stand out. This was particularly effective in scenes where the mise-en-scene was similar to the main action, shakespeare in love essay.
Shakespeare in love essay example, in scenes where the mise-en-scene involved dancing, the unimportant dancers tended to wear burgundy and brownish colours, which were similar colours to the background, whereas Shakespeare wore a vibrant green shirt and hat. Although there was barely any change in the style of clothes, shakespeare in love essay, Shakespeare always stood out of the crowd, shakespeare in love essay. This was an excellent idea. This follows my earlier point in saying that the same classes shakespeare in love essay similar clothes, which would potentially have been a big problem. We can now see that colours may have had more of an effect than some people may think. This is because not only were the colours important in making important characters stand out, but they also discreetly helped the director make the film a love story….
The colours in the background tended to be shades of red. The colour is associated with love and passion — which is probably why it seemed to me as if there was more of the colour red in passionate scenes. For example, in the close up scene of Shakespeare and Lady Viola undressing each other on the bed, the only thing we saw in the background were the closed curtains — which were red. Everyone else who was dancing were mainly wearing red and burgundy colours shakespeare in love essay which may have reflected the passion the people in the background had for their partners, shakespeare in love essay, as well as with Shakespeare and Viola.
I think the colour use is very ambiguous. I personally think that this is a good quality of a film, because it kills two birds shakespeare in love essay one stone. Then again, I can see why the ambiguity could be a bad thing — as people may think that truly great directors could make characters unique, without making them physically different. On the other hand, colour would be less important to the director, compared with him showing that he could shakespeare in love essay a realistic film — because I people world prefer a film that was to their taste, rather than to the tastes of a 16th century audience after all, shakespeare in love essay, fashions do change with time.
Because people back then would expect different things from the entertainment industry, the director would have to modernise the film to an extent, to make it more appealing for our shakespeare in love essay, but without ruining the historical background from which it came from, to make the film believable. with candles and basic camera-angles ; but he had to change some things, such as the language used, so that we could understand what was being said on-screen. This is because people who find it hard to decipher text would find it difficult to translate what was being said into everyday English, never mind do it so that they could keep up with the plot at the same time!
This is probably why the only character in the first few scenes that spoke old English frequently, shakespeare in love essay Shakespeare, who in the film was called Will. This was another way in which the film was modernised — by making the name, William, relate to its modern equivalent. We frequently saw Shakespeare recite sonnets, particularly if he and Viola were together. I think the modernisation was needed to suit a general audience, but I would have welcomed more old spoken English. For viewers in shakespeare in love essay outside the UK, the lack of old spoken English makes the film a bad example of how our country used to speak, shakespeare in love essay. Alternatively, small details were used to make the film look realistic.
Sometimes they were barely noticeable, yet they made a difference. They gave us a little extra information, which allowed the actors and scenery to look realistic. Some of these details included: Lighted candles; the use of a quill and ink instead of a pen, with ink stains surrounding the pots and paper; and the use of swords to fight, instead of guns. However, I saw even smaller details that if noticed by the audience would give a decent impact as well. So my point is, perhaps the director should have cut out these smaller details, and concentrate harder on making more noticeable features, which would probably have made for a better film, shakespeare in love essay.
The details of the film were accurate — despite the plot being fictional. The film is allowing us to watch a possible way in which Romeo and Juliet could have been written — but not what actually happened. The plot was constructed to resemble the plot in Romeo and Juliet — with shakespeare in love essay feuding families, two star-crossed lovers, and the struggle they had to keep their relationship going. This happened mainly when Viola and Shakespeare were together and were passionate, reciting sonnets from Romeo and Juliet. The shakespeare in love essay place this happened was at the very end of the film, when Shakespeare was still very upset about Viola leaving the country with her husband-to-be.
So much so, he wrote his next play, Twelfth night straight after she went. He made Viola the main character in the play, who ironically dresses up as a man, although this time it was her brother, Sebastian. The idea of having a muse for Shakespeare was a good idea, because it shows that Shakespeare also needs inspiration to write his extraordinary plays — which would be uplifting for all budding writers, who hope to be able to write as well as him in the future. In both, Shakespeare began to write the plays in completely different ways. I remember that at the start, he was practising writing his signature, and that he also pointed to his head a lot usually saying that he knew what he was going to write. The signatures probably show this as well; because they all seemed to be different, possibly portraying all the different people he was; trying to choose which one he wanted to live as.
When he had discovered who he was, he wrote Twelfth night straight away — showing us that his muse Viola was essential to the film. To conclude, I will give my overall opinion of the film. I would also liked to have seen more advanced techniques used — even if it resembled the period the film was set in, the camera angles seemed to get repetitive after a while. This would have made the links between them more obvious, and it would also have told us when these links were intended to stop happening.
